Aki+Arnaud Cooren’s Tiss-Tiss jewellery collection blends metal and fabric into highly finessed artworks. The Japanese-French duo continue the Tiss-Tiss series from their aluminium furniture collection, but here develop their work on a more intimate and personal scale. Aki’s father, Shinji Naoi, is a pioneering silver-smith in Japan, and Aki drew on this generational knowledge to work on the silver for this collection.

The weave of the linen is trapped in the silver as a means of preservation, and of capturing a moment in time. Such is the level of detail achieved by their masterful casting process, that the metal exhibits an illusory trompe-l’oeil effect, with the solid silver imbued with the delicacy of linen. This visual dissonance between form and surface immediately questions the nature of each item. For Aki+Arnaud, design is a matter of context and harmony, and of sharing an idea, so it is paramount that their works’ relationship with their surroundings are questioned. They appreciate that the relationship between any two objects or concepts is transient, as shifting as the strands of fabric on which their forms are modelled.
